The Henrietta Barnett School is a girls' grammar school founded in 1911 which became an academy in 2021. Consistently named among the top state schools in the country, it is known for academic excellence and enrichment opportunities. In 2022, 28 Henrietta Barnett sixth formers received Oxbridge offers.
Located in Hampstead Garden Suburb, the school has recently completed ambitious refurbishments including eight science labs, a new music and drama school, an art and design centre, and an extended library. Students are driven by 'a thirst for learning and a strong sense of pride in belonging to the diverse, inclusive, high-performing, friendly and supportive school community'.
The 2023–2024 term dates at The Henrietta Barnett School are:
Before you register you should speak to your child’s teacher to see if the 11 plus is right for them.
Register your child to take the First Round test by completing the online application form which is available from 28th April 2023 and closes on 14th July 2023. Your child will be invited to take the First Round test at the school on a morning or afternoon session on 4th or 5th September 2023.
If you're applying for the other girls' grammar school in Barnet (St Michael's Catholic School), you will need to register for their exam separately. The grammar schools in Barnet use the same 11 plus test provider, but the schools have chosen to use different combinations of papers and have separate processes.
Some parents also register for grammar schools further afield such as Latymer or South West Herts grammar schools.
The highest-scoring 300 candidates are invited back to take The Henrietta Barnett Second Round test in early October 2023. You will get your child's results from this second test in mid-to-late October.
You can use the results to decide which schools to include on your local authority application form.
Before listing The Henrietta Barnett School as a preference on your form, check its admissions policy and make sure your child is eligible. As well as performance in the entrance tests, how close you live to a school is another factor in whether you are likely to be offered a place.
The application form must be submitted to your home local council by 31st October 2023.
The Henrietta Barnett First Round exam consists of GL Assessment papers, similar to the other Barnet grammar schools.
Children are tested in:
All questions are multiple-choice and children record their answers in a separate answer booklet which is marked electronically.
The school writes its own Second Round test papers. These asses:
The questions are designed to test children's literacy and numeracy at a Key Stage 2 level, which is likely to include both Year 5 and Year 6 national curriculum objectives. Candidates will be asked to apply their skills and knowledge to new situations.

The Henrietta Barnett School does not state a specific pass mark. The cut-off score depends on the performance of the cohort each year. In 2021, 2,849 children applied for places in Year 7. There are 104 places available, and broadly, the highest-scoring children are selected.
The planned admission number (PAN) for the school is 104. Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that names The Henrietta Barnett School are admitted first. Places are then allocated in this order:
1. Current or previously Looked After Children who rank within the top 300 applicants in the First Round test.
2. Children who get free school meals and rank within the top 300 applicants in the First Round test. (You must provide written evidence that your child qualifies for free school meals by 15th July.)
3. Children who live within three miles of the school and have taken the Second Round test. If there are more candidates in this category than places available, then places are allocated in rank score order.
4. All remaining candidates in rank score order
The Henrietta Barnett School does not have a defined catchment area, but children who live within three miles of the school will be prioritised under category 3 (above). Distance from the school is measured in a straight line between the child's home address and the school's main entrance on Central Square.
When children are equally ranked under category 4, they will be prioritised in order of how close they live to the school.
