The 11 plus exam takes place on Saturday 23rd September 2023. All of the grammar schools in the CSSE take the same exam, which is created and administered by the CSSE itself.

The CSSE 11 plus consists of two papers:

  • English: one hour, with some additional reading time. It comprises questions that test reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and applied literacy and verbal reasoning. There will also be two pieces of creative writing.
  • Maths: one hour. Children will be tested on the Key Stage 2 national curriculum, with additional non-verbal and mathematical reasoning questions.

What is the pass mark for Southend High School for Girls?

After your child takes the CSSE exam, a team of independent professional markers will double-mark and check the papers. Some scores will be age-standardised and then the results for each school will be ranked in order.

The pass mark can vary from year to year. In 2022, the pass mark at Southend High School for Girls was 303 for children living within the priority area, and 311 for children living outside the priority area.

The CSSE does not normally make secondary school offers to any child who has scored under a total standardised score of 303. However, some appeals outside of this criteria are successful.

How are places prioritised?

Any child who has passed the CSSE 11 plus and who has an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) that names Southend High School for Girls as their preferred choice, will be prioritised for a place at the school. If this happens, then the number of places available to other children will be reduced accordingly.

The school will then allocate places for children in the following order, until 180 places have been filled:

1. Looked After and previously Looked After children who have exceeded the pass mark

2. Children who have exceeded the pass mark, and live within postcodes SS0 to SS9, and are entitled to preferential consideration

3. Other children who live within postcodes SS0 to SS9, who have exceeded the pass mark

4. Children who live outside postcodes SS0 to SS9, and are entitled to preferential consideration, who have exceeded the pass mark

5. Other children who live outside postcodes SS0 to SS9, who have exceeded the pass mark

Preferential consideration is always given to Looked After and previously Looked After Children, and children who are in receipt of the Pupil Premium or Free School Meals.

Find answers to our frequently asked questions about Southend High School for Girls

  • Where will my Form Room be next year? and how will I find out which form room is mine?
Form Rooms will be the normal teaching room (or as close to it as we could get) of your Form Tutor. That means that your form room could be in any area of the school. Year groups are not always all in the same area for their form rooms therefore, you are highly likely to have neighbours from different year groups. You can find out your form room in two different ways. For those of you who have access to Show My Homework, your new timetable will appear on your first day back. This will have your Form Room on it. Alternatively, an email will be sent to parents advising you of your form room prior the summer holidays. New Year 7s and Year 12s will receive a paper copy of their timetable on the first day of term.
  • Will I be able to have and use a locker? And where will this be located?
Yes, you will be able to use a locker again. Over the summer the site team will be working hard to allocate students with lockers near to their form rooms. Your tutor will tell you more on the first day back.
  • What time will school end?
The end of the school day will be 3:30pm for all year groups.
  • Will Show My Homework and MS Teams be used next year?
Yes, these platforms are now a long-term part of our learning toolkit. No doubt the way in which they are used will evolve over time, however, we anticipate that they will continue to be used in the same way they have this year.
